Two mandates. One zone.
A complete manufacturing value chain.

MPMED-SEZ is the only Special Economic Zone in East Africa integrating pharmaceutical manufacturing and medical device assembly within a single, formally designated industrial zone — serving a domestic public procurement market worth USD 491 million annually (MSD) with import dependency exceeding 80%, while providing access to over 331 million consumers across the EAC and more than 450 million across SADC.

Pharmaceuticals

Tanzania imports more than 80% of its medicines — with only 19 local pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities compared to 726 approved foreign manufacturers supplying the market. MPMED-SEZ is the designated zone to scale domestic production of generics, biologics, APIs, vaccines, and traditional medicines at industrial scale under WHO-GMP compliant manufacturing standards.

Medical Devices

More than 90% of Tanzania’s medical devices and 99% of diagnostic equipment are imported — with 157,444 import permits issued between 2022–2025 alone. MPMED-SEZ establishes East Africa’s first dedicated medical device assembly zone — supporting precision surgical instruments, clinical consumables, IVD diagnostics, and digital health technologies.
